How to Save Money on Wedding Photography

All brides want that one photograph that perfectly captures the wedding day. But to get it, you have to hire a skilled photographer--and unfortunately, they usually cost several thousand dollars. Here are some tips to cropping your photography budget down to size:
1. Post an ad in the art department at a local college or university for a photographer. You'd be surprised at the talent and skill available--and for a lot less. Just be prepared to assemble your album from the developed photos.
2. Lose the prints and go digital. Many photographers now offer this as an option; so instead of getting proofs/prints you can get your 'photos' on CD. Then check out an online photo editor/developer like Shutterfly for printed photos. (Shutterfly even offers the first 15 prints free for signing up--so you can try it risk free.)
3. Make your own wedding album. Depending on your photographer and the number of photo taken you can save hundreds (or more) by putting together your own album.
4. Reduce the number of hours you'll need a photographer. For example, instead of having the photographer follow you around while you're running to the salon to get your hair done, have your bridesmaids snap those photos.
5. Forego the photographer at your reception and provide disposable cameras for your guests. You'll get a better variety of pictures because the guests will be sure to take some photos of each other--and not just the bride and groom. (Trust me, this is a good thing. You'll get tired of sorting through hundreds of pictures of yourself that all look the same.)

How to Choose Your Wedding Photographer

One of the most important days in your life is around the corner. Family and friends, some you have not seen for many years, will be there. It will be a wonderful day for you to remember and share with others. There will be so many things going on of which most you will not even be aware of until you look at the wedding photographs.

Choosing a photographer may be a daunting task, and staying within your budget may be even more cumbersome. You may consider asking a friend or relative to photograph your wedding for you; this is sure to be a bad idea for many reasons. A professional wedding photographer knows how to produce the best results in capturing all the moments by having years of experience and photography knowledge.

Finding a wedding photographer is a very easy task due to the number of photographers out there. There are numerous ways of going about finding one and many things you should take into consideration. The best way of course is being referred from another couple that got married recently and had their wedding photographed by a specific photographer. Please take note that by “photographer” I mean a specific photographer and not photographic studio with multiple photographers. Always be sure to find out who will be photographing your wedding.

There are numerous other ways to find a wedding photographer including news papers, billboards, the phone book and of course the internet. Over 70% of wedding photographers are sourced online. There are however a few things that you should know about searching for one on the internet.

1. Take Your Time
The first photographers you will find are mostly because of a large advertising budget. There is nothing wrong with this, but you should look at all available options.
2. Be Specific
When you use a search engine your search criteria should include your “state” and “professional wedding photographer”. The quotes will eliminate all general photographers and narrow your search to only wedding photographers. I recommend using Google.

Now that you know how to find a wedding photographer, which one do you choose? There are three primary factors that will determine which photographer to choose; style, price and personality. Style and price can be found on their website and is our starting point.

1. Style
There are many different style wedding photographers. Different examples are traditional, candid, formal, photojournalism, etc. Some photographers offer only one style, but the best photographers can offer all of these styles and would normally incorporate them into your wedding day coverage. It all depends on your requirements and needs. When viewing a photographers portfolio, remember that these are all his best shots. Always ask to see a full wedding coverage.
2. Price
You can spend anything from $500 to $10,000 on a wedding photographer. A good guideline is to spend about 10% of your entire wedding budget on a wedding photographer. Most photographers have packages that will include everything from the coverage to the album and final prints. Other photographers have complete al la carte pricing; if you are on a tight budget this is probably the best way to go. You will be able to select just what you want and can afford.

I would suggest buying your own wedding album and putting it together yourself. The cost of buying an album from the photographer is usually double the actual cost. Then of course doing it this way you can get it when you want and when you can afford it.

Considering style and price select your three top choices and schedule a meeting with them. There should be no cost for this. Before you meet with them you should pretty much want to hire them from the information that you have gathered about their style and price.

3. Personality
You want to meet with them to see how they present themselves and if your personalities match. You want someone that is personable and nice so they will get along well with you, your family, and friends. Never make an immediate decision, go home and think about it first and wait until you have met with all three. The meeting should be casual, discussing your wedding day in general. Never get sold on services that the photographer is trying to sell you at this point. Remember you have already decided you like the work and price before you got there, so there is nothing for the photographer to sell to you at this point. Just meet with them and get to know them.

Once you have made your decision, contact the photographer and let them know. Don’t forget to contact the other two photographers to let them know that you have decided to use another photographer and thank them for their time. Go over the details on the phone with the photographer you chose and get them to write up a wedding contract for you to review and sign. Do not pay a deposit until you have reviewed and signed the contract. Read the wedding contract very thoroughly; everything you are suppose to receive should be written down and have the price and payment schedule. Always make a very clear note of their cancellation policy.

Congratulations! You have a found your wedding photographer and have one scheduled. All you need to do now is schedule to meet with them about a month before your wedding date to go over the details again……and show up for your wedding!

Wedding Photography: How to Become a Successful Wedding Photographer

Once in while I receive e-mails or phone calls from aspiring or beginner wedding photographers asking me for advise on how to become successful in the wedding field. My first question is always what their motivation is to become a wedding photographer. Some will reply that they heard from somebody that it is easy money, or that they got a cool camera that takes great photos or that they would like to make some money on the side etc. While it is true that wedding photography can be a very profitable business achieving success in the wedding industry is not just a matter of getting a camera and start shooting. Wedding photography involves artistic talent, human sense, complete mastery of photographic techniques, business knowledge, and a strong desire to learn and deliver the best to the wedding couple.
Here I have summarized some points that I believe will guide beginner wedding photographers:
1. Learn photography before anything else. A wedding photographer is expected to be a master of the craft. You will be in charge of capturing people's most precious life moments. The wedding day is not the place to learn photography.
2. Just because you got a brand new camera it does not automatically make you an effective and reliable photographer. Photography goes beyond cool toys and gadgets. Learn composition and develop a unique artistic vision. Some of the great photographs of all time were taken with manual cameras.
3. Master the digital workflow, including color management, digital image processing, file management and image correction and enhancement.
4. Learn to love photography more than anything else. Don't come to the wedding photography field with just dreams of making money. It is true that there are many successful wedding photographers that make a lot of money. However according to the Professional Photographers of America the average photographer in America makes about $24,000 a year.
5. Focus on delivering quality more than quantity. Seek with all your heart to capture unique photographs.
6. Develop a style that is recognizable and unique. Don't try to be like somebody else. Clients look for unique photographers, with a unique vision.
7. Give wedding photography all your heart and effort. Long when you are gone your photographs will last forever. It is a great way to be remembered.
8. Open your heart and your mind and great photos will happen. Concentrate on the human aspect of weddings, the details, and emotions and be ready to capture them. Let the camera become an extension of you.
9. Share your technical knowledge and make connections with other wedding photographers.
10. Participate in wedding photography image competitions. It will give you the opportunity to have your work evaluated by peers and the motivation to improve your work quality.
11. Learn something new everyday. Take advantage of professional photography organizations such as Professional Photographers of America (PPA), WPPI, etc. Attend their seminars, workshops. Participate in Internet wedding photography forums and learn and share tips, tools and techniques.
12. Don't neglect the business aspect of wedding photography. Learn to manage your business effectively. Take business courses and seminars.

Wedding Photography - Tips for a Wonderful Session

Every couple wants wonderful photos of their wedding day that capture the celebration, details, romance and beauty. Here are a few tips for a successful photo session:
1. Hire a professional qualified wedding photographer. Don't be tempted to hire "Uncle Harry" to do your wedding photos. Focus on quality wedding photography. At the end in won't matter how much you save or spend if you end up with bad photos or no photos at all.
2. Take the time to select the best wedding photographer that you can have. Make sure that you are in agreement regarding the style of photography.
3. Don't give your wedding photographer a long list of must have photos that you printed from the Internet. You will only hinder the photographer's creativity and the capture of true spontaneous photographs. Hire a photographer with a style that you like and then give him or her artistic freedom to capture your wedding day photography.
4. If you are going to have a ceremony outdoors please plan it away from the harsh sun. Shaded areas and afternoon sunlight are best.
5. Try to have an engagement session with the same photographer that will photograph your wedding. It will allow you to interact with the photographer before your wedding day and will help the photographer evaluate your best angles.
6. Plan enough time for your photographic session. Even if the wedding photographer is good he or she won't be able to give you wonderful photos in just five minutes.
7. Take your time to do your hair and make up and to take care of all the details so you look good and fresh. The wedding day is not the time to try new makeup or a new hair look. If possible hire a professional hair and makeup artist and have a trial session before the wedding.
8. Plan your photo session for afternoon or evening light unless it is an overcast day. The light will be better and you will end up with beautiful photos. Contrary to popular belief midday sunny time is the worst time to take photos.
9. Please don't forget to rest well the day before the wedding and eat and stay hydrated during the day. If you are tired, thirsty or hungry it will show up in your photos.
10. Don't make photography of groups the entire focus of your wedding day. A few group photos are ok to record the friends and relatives at the wedding. There is nothing more boring that a wedding album full of group photos.
11. Be yourself. The goal of the wedding photographer is to capture the true you. If the photos are nice but show a fake person you won't be happy.
12. Have fun and treat the photographer like a human being. Enjoy your day, smile a lot and relax.

Current Trends in Wedding Photography

Wedding photography is an evolving field that requires artistic talent, vision, and highly technical expertise.
In the past wedding photography was almost always limited to stiff posses without much regard for the underlying story, emotion, romance, and behind the scene events of the wedding day.
Although there is still a big segment of the wedding industry that practices traditional photography with its preplanned poses, and recreation of the wedding peak events such as the kiss, the ring exchange, etc., the modern wedding couple demands a more contemporary approach to their wedding day.
Wedding photojournalism has been in vogue for the past decade. The central idea behind it has been the capture of the wedding events without any interference or direction from the wedding photographer. The photographer is there to capture the true essence of the wedding day. As a result of this realistic approach the photographs are a true representation of the wedding day. Hard core wedding journalistic will be totally opposed to posing any wedding related event. If it doesn’t not happen during the wedding it won’t be recorded. This includes family group photos.
Several photographers offer a hybrid approach to wedding photography, usually a combination of traditional and journalistic wedding photography. In this approach the photographer focuses on documenting the wedding day but the coverage also includes a session with the couple for formal posed or semi-posed photographs and also family group photos.
The latest trend in wedding photography is toward a more fashionable approach. Inspired on high-end fashion magazines such as Vogue, Elle, InStyle, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, GQ, American Photo, etc., and wedding magazines the photographer seeks to make the couple’s fantasies real. In the fashion wedding photography approach the goal is to make the wedding couple look their best. Their romantic interplay is glamorized to its maximum expression. The everyday couple becomes like wedding celebrities. Attention to detail is required to achieve the perfect look. This approach requires a great deal of artistic talent behind the camera and also great computer image editing skill to produce a unique photo. Half the photo is made on the camera with the second half achieved though digital image editing and manipulation.
Which style is best, is for you to decide. In our experience a big segment of the wedding couples want to capture the reality, details and romance of the wedding day but at the same time they have fantasies about their wedding and the way they should look.
When making a decision for a wedding photographer look closely to the photographer’s portfolio and see how it agrees with your philosophy on how your wedding day should be photographed. Regardless of your philosophy please make sure that you select a master of the craft, you and the next generation deserve masterpiece memories of your wedding day.

Digital SLR Camera Buying Secrets

Digital SLR camera buying makes more and more sense to both professionals and amateurs. Even when film cameras were much more cheaper than digital SLR's, people still tried buying them, as it made a lot of sense, with all the benefits that justified the higher price.
SLR Benefits
There are two main advantages to SLR cameras:
1. You can change the lenses on your digital SLR camera when you need to, so the photos you take have an increased quality. You can use lenses designed for telephoto, wide-angle, portrait, or any other modes.
2.Thanks to the viewfinder of the SLR, the photographer can see the preview of the image just like the lens sees it. In cameras that have the lens attached, you don't see the image from the exact viewpoint of the lens, so there is a small difference between what you see and what you get. If you want the real deal, you need a digital SLR.
Digital SLRs and lenses
In most cases, digital SLRs that you can buy these days will take the lenses that film cameras did, so if you already have lenses for your film camera, you can use them on the digital SLR as well.
It's easy to change the lenses on a camera, but you should keep in mind something: a 35mm lens is made so it projects the image on a frame of the same size, but the camera's image sensor is smaller than the frame is. That's why the SLR multiplies that lens focal length by 1.5.
In many cases, this can be something good, as a 200mm lens becomes as good as a 300mm, which is much more expensive. But, in other cases, a 24mm wide lens would turn in a 36mm, and the photographer might not want that.
All in all, the multiplier of the focal length is a bit of a mixed blessing. If you're using a long lens, the zoom will be much better, but in the case of a wide lens, the full scene might not be fully captured this way.
Kodak and Canon are the first to launch a digital SLR full frame camera. They're quite expensive though, but they come with a sensor that is the same size as the 35mm frame.
There are many other manufacturers that are going to launch SLR cameras that are fully integrated with lenses and they will work by getting the image on the sensor directly, instead of using an angle.
Getting the perfect SLR camera, is never an easy thing, especially with the way digital technology is constantly changing. Fortunately, there are plenty of helpful websites online, that can narrow down your search and help you find the DSLR camera with all the features important to you.

How to Optimize Your Pictures For Digital Online Printing

Digital online printing sites can be a great way to get your prints delivered straight to your home, but they do require a bit of preparation in order to get the best quality possible. The quality of the print you get depends on the image you use. There are a few things you can do to optimize the image file before sending it along for printing.
The first thing you need to do is upload or scan your picture to your computer's hard drive. This is simple if you have a digital photo, but will be a bit more complicated if you are using an actual print photo. In that case, you will need a good scanner to get the image onto your computer. If you only have a few pictures to scan, it may be more economical to take them down to copying service store and pay to use their scanners. Printing stores generally have higher-quality equipment than the average home user.
Now you need to open up your photo editing software. This can be either a standalone program or the photo editing tools offered on the site itself. Many sites give you a set of free tools you can use to touch up your photos before sending them on for printing. Each site's user interface will be different, so look around to find one that is easy to use and meets any specific editing needs you have.
Many digital cameras and scanners rotate your image so that it is upside down. You can easily fix this by using a rotate tool in photo editing software. Just click the rotate button until the picture is right side up. Red eye is another common issue with digital pictures. If you don't want the red eye effect to appear on photos, you'll need to do some correction. Today's editing software for photos usually comes with a feature that makes this very easy.
Be sure to save your image file in a format that is compatible with the online site you are using. For the best quality output, you need the best quality file for input. Use the .jpg or .gif extension with the highest possible quality offered by your software.
You may have other adjustments that need to be done to your photo before you send it for printing. With the number of free editing tools available, it is easy to adjust the color, hue or saturation. You can also use your own desktop photo editing software. Simply open your photo image, and look for the tool that will adjust these settings. There is usually some sort of slider bar that will let you adjust the desired settings. Continue to tweak and adjust until you are happy with the end product. After all, you can't change it once you have already sent it off to be printed. Avoid additional printing fees by checking everything ahead of time.
MJ Johnston writes for a variety of websites, including Hoorray, a photo sharing site that offers the quickest and easiest way to create a free online photo album and quality digital photo printing.

Photo Storage Made Simple

If you are like many avid photographers, you likely have envelopes full of photographs and CDs full of photos that are stuffed into desk drawers and file cabinets all over your home. Being overwhelmed by the task of organization is something that happens to everyone, not just photographers, but when you consider that you will be able to enjoy your photographs more when you can find them to display and look at, it makes sense to look at different photo storage solutions and see which might work for you.
There are several from which to choose, including a photo storage box system, print sleeves and a cd storage sleeve, which can be placed with others inside a notebook for easy organization.
Photo Storage Box System
There are several different types of materials that can be used to create a photo storage box. Archival photo storage boxes are available, which are large, flat boxes about two to three inches deep. These will hold a great number of photographs, and are perfect for stacking because the best of them come with reinforced corners for added strength. A photo storage box system allows you to organize photos by year or subject matter, or by photographer, so you have a systematic way to carry on in your organization method of choice.
Print Sleeves
Print sleeves offer an excellent way to organize your photographs in albums. There are sleeves available that come in acid-free varieties, which will help to prevent dirt, pollution and ultraviolet light, as well as water, from damaging the surface of your fine art photographs. They load from the top or the side and are a great type of photo storage method that can help to bring order to your photo collection.
CD Storage Sleeve Solutions
Storage sleeves for CDs and DVDs are infinitely useful. Because they take up much less room than jewel cases, many people find they can store many more discs in them as compare with the standard case. Storage sleeves can also be labeled, so you will never have to search for exactly the CD you want from among dozens that look alike.
Other Photo Storage Methods If you want to store your photos individually, or if you wish to offer photos for sale, clear bags could be the photo storage solution that will work for you. There are acid-free bags available that will preserve and protect your fine art photographs for years.
Whether you select boxes, sleeves or bags, there is a storage solution for your many photos.
Anne Harvester is an avid fan of arts and crafts such as photo storage or CD storage sleeve. Anne believes a photo storage box is just as important as the picture itself since it's a safeguard for something you value.

Personalise Your Own Photo Calendar

A photo calendar is a great way to help you keep track of important dates, times, and events and it can also make a superb way of showing off some of your favourite photos of any subject. A personalised photo calendar can be customised with thirteen of your chosen images, and you can even add your own title and captions for each of the pages in order to make a beautifully stunning and highly personalised calendar.
Add Your Own Pictures
Every page of the personalised photo calendar can be customised with your chosen picture. The front page can display one large picture while each of the monthly pages also benefits from the addition of a picture. You could have a photo calendar made using pictures of the family, photos of the cats, or a series of before, during, and after pictures from your latest classic car renovation.
Add Your Own Captions
As well as adding photos to each page, you can also add a title to the front page and a text caption to each of the monthly pages. Whether you choose witty, informational, or memorable quotes is up to you but the ability to add a caption is just another way that you can personalise your very own photo calendar.
Choose The Order And Pick A Start Month
Once you've picked your captions and photos, and once you've designed the front cover, you need to select the order in which these selections will appear. You get to determine which month displays which picture and, what's more, you can even decide which month the calendar should start from. If you're giving one as a birthday or other gift then this is a handy aspect of the calendar's personalisation.
Pets, Cars, Family, And Holiday Snaps
The biggest benefit of the personalised photo calendar is that you have complete control over what it looks like. You decide on the pictures and the captions so you can choose a them for the overall calendar. Photos of the family, holiday snaps, or pictures of your yacht can all make excellent personalised photo calendars but these are only a few ideas - the final choice really is yours.
Put Them In Your Kitchen Or Give Them As Gifts
The photo calendar makes an excellent gift and because you can determine the month the calendar starts it means you can even give one as a birthday gift in July or an anniversary present in October. Alternatively, no matter what month of the year it is, you can have a photo calendar created so that you can display it and use it in your own home.
Personalised Photo Gifts
The photo calendar, or personalised calendar, is just one type of photo gift and there are many other great options that you can give as gifts or keep for yourself. Items like photo canvases, photo bags, and even photo cushions and blankets all have this same dual purpose of being brilliant gifts and ideal for your own use.
The Bags of Love website has an extensive collection of photo gifts and gift ideas that can be given for any occasion or kept for yourself. The photo calendar is just one of these items - visit the website now to see many more.

Custom Silhouettes

We all like to create memories through pictures and artwork. For many of us this is a hobby, which allows us to capture priceless moments that can be used in a manner of ways. Some of these include being framed and mounted, turned into a canvas print or merely taking pride of place in a photo album. If you are however looking for something slightly different then why not try an old concept with a modern twist? I am of course talking about turning photographs into custom silhouettes.
The art of silhouettes is a technique that was developed long before photography was invented. It represents a view of an object or a scene that is made of the outline with no features on the interior of said outline. It is a technique that goes back to the 18th century where pictorial representations where cut from thin black card.
There are several methods to achieving a custom silhouette such as they may be painted or drawn. For a more traditional method it would involve cutting the image out of lightweight black cardboard, and mounting it onto a lighter (usually white) background. In more modern methods, custom silhouettes can be made into decoration custom stickers; these are known as custom vinyl silhouettes. They have the thickness of a single coat of paint and resemble hand painted artwork. If you are hoping to gain a custom silhouette that you can display on a variety of surfaces around your property then vinyl silhouettes are defiantly the way to go.
Head profile, half body, full body, pets and objects as well as landscape; basically you can have almost anything turned into a custom silhouette. In the past this was primarily done by drawing the image. In more modern times however digital photos are used to create the silhouette image. You are able to personalize your home, office, and car or anywhere with the things that matter most to you, as long as you have a photo of it!
Another great aspect of these wonderful pieces of artwork is the fact that they make great gifts for special occasions; birthdays, mother's day, valentines day, the list could go on but if you are ever suck for what to buy someone then the answer may lie with a custom silhouette. They provide unique gifts that are a fun twist on a normal photograph. If however you are just looking to add a finishing touch to a room then they provide the perfect alternative source of wall art as well.
Custom silhouettes are no longer limited to being old fashioned. In our day and age you can get pretty much anything turned into a silhouette plus they can be printed in any combination of sizes, quantities, colors, and even combined with other illustrations to create a group print.
There is so much potential with this form of artwork, meaning whatever image you are trying to portray you will more than likely be able to. So for a modern take on a very traditional form of image production give custom silhouettes ago!
For all of your Custom Silhouette needs look no further than Vinyl Silhouettes. They can pretty much turn any digital photograph into a Custom Silhouette piece of art for you to use at your leisure.
